Letting the Layout Shine
There are days when the layout really does all the heavy lifting—and today was one of those days. I sat down to play with scraps of cardstock and Designer Series Paper, and before I knew it, I had three finished cards on my desk, all built from the exact same simple layout. It’s one of those designs that looks intentional and polished, yet is incredibly forgiving and perfect for using up those strips and bits we all hate to toss.

The first card began with a Very Vanilla card base giving me a classic portrait fold. Strips from the North Pole Delivery Designer Series Paper created an instant framed look, with the smaller envelope pattern tucked into the top left and bottom portions, and the longer dotted Pool Party strips running along the remaining sides. Once those pieces were in place, they naturally guided the eye straight to the center of the card, which made deciding where everything else should go incredibly easy.

The sentiment, “Special Delivery” from the Jolly Delivery stamp set, was stamped in Early Espresso on a small Very Vanilla panel and matted with Pool Party before being popped up with dimensionals right in the center of the DSP frame. From there, the die-cut elements did all the storytelling. The sweet brown bear delivering mail, a red-outlined letter, and two playful postage-style pieces layered beautifully, with some adhered flat and others raised to add depth without overwhelming the design. A sprinkling of Real Red Delightful Decorative Dots finished the card front, adding just the right amount of shine. Inside, Pool Party framed a Very Vanilla writing panel, with a tiny Real Red pre-cut letter tucked into the lower corner as a cheerful surprise.

What really surprised me was how effortlessly this same layout translated into two other completely different looks. The second card used a Gray Granite card base paired with Garden Green postage-style DSP and coordinating cardstock that had been dry embossed with the Peaceful Greenery 3D Embossing Folder.

I was intentional about orienting the embossed foliage so it flowed toward the sides of the card, visually leaning into the framed layout. The focal panel, still Very Vanilla and this time matted with Garden Green, became the perfect stage for a lively cast of fun critters, presents, and letters.

Each image felt like it belonged, anchored together around the center panel without feeling crowded. The Garden Green sentiment reading “Hope This Christmas is the Most Magical Yet” tied everything together, while a trio of Real Red Delightful Decorative Dots added a pop of festive color. Inside, Garden Green framed a Very Vanilla writing space, accented by a Pecan Pie letter with a Real Red stamp in the corner—simple, sweet, and very finish-worthy.

The third card pushed the layout in a bolder direction with a Basic Black card base. This one relied entirely on DSP, using the Real Red and Very Vanilla grid patterns to form the frame. The center focal panel remained Very Vanilla, matted with Real Red, proving just how versatile this layout truly is. A whimsical dog balancing presents on its back steals the show, trotting happily across the bottom of the focal piece in full holiday flair.

The sentiment, “Merry Christmas and Happy Wishes,” was stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black and layered with Stylish Shapes dies for a crisp, graphic look that worked beautifully against the background. Three Real Red Decorative Dots scattered near the sentiment added balance and sparkle. Inside, a Real Red border framed the writing panel, finished with two playful paw prints stamped in the corner—because even the inside deserves a moment.
Here are the measurements I used (all in inches):
- Card base – 8-1/2 x 5-12, scored and folded at 4-1/4 or 4-1/4 x 11, scored and folded at 5-1/2
- DSP – (2) 1 x 4-1/4 and (2) 1 x 3
- Focal Point – 1-3/4 x 3
- Mat for Focal Point – 1-7/8 x 3-1/8
- Inside – Writing area 3-3/4 x 5 and mat 3-7/8 x 5-1/8

And here’s the video of how the layout comes together from my YouTube channel:
for This layout is one I’ll absolutely return to again and again. It’s fast, flexible, and makes scraps look intentional rather than leftover. Whether you lean soft and charming, classic Christmas, or bold and playful, this design adapts effortlessly while letting every piece shine. If your scrap pile is calling your name, this layout might just be the answer.
