A Guy Card!

DSP Glow-Up That’s Giving Rugged + Refined

Sometimes you just have to take your Designer Series Paper a step further—and this card does exactly that. I started with strips of Delicate Dreams DSP and gave them a whole new personality by layering them onto a Basic White panel and running everything through the Forever Plaid 3D Embossing Folder. That alone added incredible texture, but the real magic happened when I brought in a nail buffer and gently sanded the surface. The result is this beautifully distressed, almost weathered look that tones down the patterns and gives the whole panel a rugged, masculine feel.

From there, I leaned into that elevated texture by pairing it with Earthen Toned Metallic Specialty Paper. Using the Springtime Scenes dies, I die cut the sentiment and foliage elements right from the metallic panel—then here’s a little trick I love: I covered that die cut area with my embossed DSP panel. It’s a great way to stretch your specialty paper, and no one will ever know what’s underneath!

The sentiment got a bit of extra attention with white heat embossing on the metallic surface, which really makes it pop. I added a simple linen thread detail by threading it through tiny punched holes on each side of the sentiment and securing the ends behind the panel. It gives that subtle, finished touch without using extra thread wrapping around the entire card—such a satisfying little win.

Once everything was layered up with Dimensionals onto a landscape-style card base, I tucked in the leafy die cuts and finished it off with a few Early Espresso Earthy Matte Dots. The inside is clean and classic with a Basic White panel matted on Crumb Cake, tying everything together beautifully.

What I love most about this card is how it completely transforms a paper that might not typically be your first pick for a masculine design. With a little embossing, a bit of sanding, and some metallic accents, it becomes something entirely new—textured, rich, and perfect for a guy card.

I also have a video to share with you where you can see this technique come to life. If you’re more of a visual learner or just want to craft along with me, be sure to check it out below. I walk through the embossing and sanding process so you can really see how that distressed look develops—and trust me, it’s even more satisfying in action.

I’m entering this card into the Cardz 4 Guyz #384 challenge using light blue and brown, and also into the Try It On Tuesday challenge where the theme is to create your own background. This one checks all the boxes and then some.

I have to say… I’m a little obsessed with how this turned out. It’s proof that sometimes all your paper needs is a little extra love—and maybe a nail buffer—to really shine.
