Easy Shutter Card

Today’s project is one of those cards that instantly makes people say, “Wow!” — and the best part? It’s so much easier than it looks! This Shutter Card is full of motion, color, and surprise, and once you learn the simple trick for assembling the mechanism, you’ll be making one for every occasion you can imagine.

For the card I create in the video, I start with a base of Gorgeous Grape — one of my all-time favorite purples — and pair it with a breathtaking sunrise-style paper from the Splendid Autumn Designer Series Paper pack. The scene reminds me of a peaceful morning, with soft purples stretching across the sky and trees silhouetted in the distance. It’s the kind of paper that makes your heart pause for a moment, and I just knew it would be perfect for the focal point of a fun fold like this.

The card begins with a gatefold base, and once you add the cleverly cut shutter pieces, the center opens and closes like a camera lens to reveal the message inside. The mechanism pieces are crafted from matching Gorgeous Grape cardstock, and once they’re scored, trimmed, and layered, they slide so smoothly — just like magic! When you open the card, the shutters gracefully reveal the sentiment tucked inside: “To Someone Worth Celebrating Every Single Day.” That phrase from The Right Words stamp set is a perfect fit for birthdays, milestones, and “just because” celebrations.

Because I love to add a little polish, the center panel that hides the shutter is accented with another piece of Splendid Autumn DSP, framed beautifully with more Gorgeous Grape cardstock. I used Stylish Shapes Dies to create the circular opening and added the sentiment on Basic White cardstock underneath. Once the shutter pieces are in place, the reveal feels like a ta-da moment every single time!

To make the inside just as special, I included a few white panels for handwritten notes and strips of coordinating paper to tie everything together. And of course, since this card has some inside layers, a belly band holds it all shut snugly. This one is Gorgeous Grape, burnished to perfection, and finished off with a sweet sentiment from With You in Mind that says “Happy Birthday.” I decided to enter this card into the Sweet Stampin’ Challenge where the theme is Inspired by a Book/Song/Film and I was inspired by the song Sunrise by Norah Jones.

I couldn’t stop at just one of these cards! I also created two variations that show just how versatile this design is. The second card features a Crushed Curry base with more of the Splendid Autumn paper and Cajun Craze ink, filled with golden fall leaves that make you feel like you’re walking through a harvest sunset. That’s the one I’m entering in The Paper Players Challenge #760, where the theme is a Clean and Simple Foliage.

The third version swaps in Cloud Cover cardstock with the Beautiful Gallery DSP and Secret Sea ink — a soothing, coastal twist that feels serene and elegant. I had completely forgotten about this gorgeous DSP so I’m entering this card into the Neglected Stuff Challenge.

I love how each version tells its own story — bold and regal, warm and autumnal, or calm and floral — yet they all use the same simple fold. Once you know the measurements, it’s such an adaptable layout that’s perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, or just because.

If you’d like to make one of your own, I’ve got you covered! Head to the video below to watch the full YouTube Premiere where I walk you through every step (and share some extra tips along the way).

You can also grab the free downloadable PDF tutorial — it’s linked right here and includes all of the measurements, step-by-step instructions, and helpful visuals so you can follow along easily.

Thank you so much for spending some time with me today. If you watch the Premiere live, be sure to hop into the chat — I’d love to say hi! And if you catch the replay, leave me a comment and tell me which color combo you’d try first. Until next time, happy stamping, friends!
