Fault-Line Card with Floral Elegance

Today, I’m excited to share a card I created using a technique I hadn’t tried before: the fault-line card. This style is a fun way to showcase patterned paper while adding texture and dimension to your projects. I started with a Thick Basic White card base and a 3-3/4″ x 5″ panel of Basic White. The magic on this card begins by tearing the right edge of the panel about an inch and then flipping that piece over to tear an additional 1/4″ off the same edge. This creates a double tear effect with both sides of the panel having the torn edge facing up, and distressing a bit more, giving the card a unique, rugged look.

To bring in some color and texture, I selected a beautiful green patterned Designer Series Paper (DSP) from the Floral Impressions pack (165603). I placed the DSP between the two torn edges of the Basic White panel, ensuring they were spaced just right by using the card base as a template. Once I was happy with the placement, I adhered the torn edges to the DSP with a bit of glue so I could have time to move the adherence of the panel if needed. After the sides were adhered to the DSP, and to make the panel pop even more, it was attached to the card front using dimensionals.

The focal point of the card is a stunning flower from the Fully Flowering Mix & Match Ephemera Pack. I added this flower over the lower middle portion of the “fault line,” allowing it to slightly overhang the top Basic White panel on the right. Finishing off the design, I chose the “Just A Note” sentiment from the Greetings For All Mix & Match Ephemera Pack, placing it just below and to the right of the flower.

Inside the card, things were kept simple and elegant with a panel of Basic White, surrounded by a Soft Sea Foam mat. A strip of the same DSP used on the front of the card was added to the right side of the inside panel to tie everything together.

  • Measurements (all in inches):
  • Card Base – 5-1/2 x 8-1/2, scored and folded at 4-1/4
  • Layer – 3-3/4 x 5, torn about 1″ away from the right side
  • DSP under fault line – 2 x 5
  • Ephemera for focal point and sentiment
  • Inside card – Basic White 3-3/4 x 5, coordinating cardstock for mat 3-7/8 x 5-1/8, strip of DSP 1/2 x 5

I love how this card turned out, and I’m entering it into three challenges: Freshly Made Sketches #684 for the layout, AAA Cards #289 for the colors, and Inkspirational #340 where the challenge is “Seasonal” – the flowers are definitely a nod to the season! I also created a video to show exactly how this card came together, so please be sure to check it out!

This fault-line card is a perfect example of clean and simple (CAS) design, and I hope it inspires you to try something new in your next crafting session.
