Vellum Cardmaking Made Easy

Stress-Free – No More Struggling

Vellum is one of those paper crafting supplies that almost everyone loves how it looks, yet many stampers hesitate to use. It’s soft, elegant, and adds something special to a card, but questions about adhesive, layering, and how to make it work without frustration often send it right back into the drawer.

Today, I’m sharing several ways to use vellum with confidence and ease. Whether you love subtle texture, bold focal points, or softening a busy background, vellum can play so many beautiful roles on a handmade card. The key is knowing how and where to use it.

Vellum is a fabulous background layer. Dry embossing vellum adds a soft, frosted texture that feels elegant without overpowering the design. When paired with the right adhesive technique, vellum sits directly on a card base without any glue showing through. This approach is perfect for cards where you want texture and interest while still letting other layers shine.

Next, vellum is a wonderful center stage player as a focal element. Heat embossing a sentiment on vellum creates a crisp, polished look that stands out beautifully against darker cardstock and patterned paper. This technique offers strong visual impact while keeping the card clean and simple, making it a wonderful option for both masculine and feminine designs.

Vellum also works beautifully with washi tape. Adhering washi tape to vellum before die cutting softens the colors just enough to create layered floral elements that feel light and airy. Mixing vellum die cuts into projects adds depth and texture without adding bulk, which is especially helpful when creating elegant focal points.

To highlight how truly versatile vellum is, I also have vellum as the final layer in a stacked die-cut word, adding softness and dimension.

Placing a vellum panel over a boldly stamped background will quiet the design and allow the sentiment to stand out. These examples show just how easily vellum can transform a card when it’s used with intention.

I’ve also included a free PDF tutorial that you’re welcome to download and keep. It’s there to support you as you try these techniques in your own craft space, whether you’re brand new to vellum or ready to use it in new ways.

Thank you so much for stopping by and spending a little creative time with me. I hope this video inspires you to pull that vellum out of your drawer and start using it with confidence. If you give any of these ideas a try, I’d love to hear about it.
