Diagonal Cut Magic: Autumn Warmth & Peaceful Blues

Have you ever wanted to create a card that looks like a total WOW but doesn’t use up a ton of supplies? That’s exactly what today’s project is all about. I’ve been having fun with a diagonal cut design that instantly transforms an ordinary card base into something extra special. Best of all, this cut makes your paper go further, so you can create more cards with less. That’s a win in my book.

For my first card, I reached for the Amber Autumn stamp set and coordinating dies. The acorn and leaves image stamped in Early Espresso creates such a warm fall feeling. Once die cut, I trimmed the front of my Very Vanilla card base on a diagonal so the cutout disappears, leaving a sleek angle across the front. The Birch Wood 3D Embossing Folder added beautiful texture to a panel of Gold Foil, which shines from behind the diagonal cut.

To finish, I tucked in a skinny strip of Early Espresso plaid DSP right along the seam, which not only gives a polished look but also cleverly hides the join. The colored die cut acorn and leaves take center stage on the front, while a coordinating inside panel ties everything together with a few stamped and colored leaves and another sentiment. This one is full of autumn charm, and I am entering it into the Color Dare #671 Challenge.

My second version shows how versatile this diagonal cut design really is. Using the Peace on Earth stamp set with its coordinating dies, I paired it with the breathtaking Peaceful Garden DSP in shades of blue. To highlight the angled cut, I added a strip of Dark Gray Peaceful Garden Glimmer Paper where the papers meet. The shimmer adds just the right amount of drama, and the cool tones completely change the mood of the card. It’s peaceful, elegant, and perfect for the upcoming season.

I love that one simple diagonal cut can lead to so many different looks, and I can’t wait for you to try this technique. To help you out, I’ve put together a free downloadable PDF that includes the measurements and full instructions so you can recreate these cards at home.

You’ll find my video tutorial where I walk you step by step through both versions linked below. If you’re joining me for the premiere on YouTube, I’d love to see you in the live chat. And if you’re catching the replay later, please leave a comment—I always enjoy hearing which version is your favorite. If you don’t already have a demonstrator, I’d love to be your crafty cheerleader and help you with all your stamping needs. All of the supplies I used for today’s projects are listed in the PDF and on my blog so you can easily find them.

So grab that free PDF, watch the video, and try your hand at a diagonal cut card. Whether you lean toward the cozy warmth of autumn tones or the cool elegance of peaceful blues, you’re going to love how easy and fun this technique is.

  1. Beautiful Fall card and love how you used our colors in your leaves and that gold background is so pretty against the leaves and acorns. Your friend card is also so pretty. Thanks for sharing your beautiful card with us at Color Dare.
